Nokia released virtual OMCI to achieve multi-vendor ONU to OLT interoperability

Nokia has launched a multi-vendor ONU connectivity platform, claiming to be able to connect its OLT to each vendor's ONU.
This technique makes use of the virtual ONU management control interface OMCI to achieve this interconnection, just like installing a driver on a PC.

Nokia pointed out that in order to reduce the deployment cost of FTTH, telecom operators often need to purchase ONU equipment from multiple suppliers, but the ONU of these different manufacturers must be intercommunicated with OLT equipment, which may bring a lot of trouble to operators' deployment and service opening.

Nokia's multi-vendor ONT connectivity platform is an open, cloud-based software platform. Based on the company's Altiplano software platform, OMCI virtualizes and has different versions that work well with OLT and ONU.

This product of nokia brings true SDN/NFV convenience for FTTH operators, which can help operators greatly reduce the cost of business deployment and provide better services for customers.

Introduction to the hierarchical model of GPON

GPON technical features are mainly reflected in the transmission convergence layer. The transmission aggregation layer is further divided into a PON frame sublayer and an adaptation sublayer. The framing sublayer of GTC (GPON Transmission Convergence) completes the ODN transmission function required for the encapsulation and termination of GTC frames. The specific functions of the PON (such as ranging, bandwidth allocation, etc.) are also terminated at the framing sublayer of the PON. The gametophyte layer is invisible. The adaptation sublayer of the GTC provides an interface between the PDU and the higher layer entity.
